In the midst of a fast-changing legal and policy environment, a Google team is introducing Checks, a new platform for mobile apps developers that uses AI technology to uncover potential security and compliance concerns within applications. The freemium service will be available to all kinds of Android and iOS app developers, who’ll be able to have their applications assessed and then get a report with meaningful tips on how to fix the issues that are discovered.

Checks was co-founded by Fergus Hurley (GM) and Nia Castelly (Legal Lead), who worked on the project for the past 2 years as part of Google’s in-house incubator, Area 120. The Checks team had previously produced products like Android Vitals to solve technical issues for developers, and they had the notion to now employ AI to handle privacy compliance difficulties as well.

Nowadays app developers must comply with a slew of updated regulations and standards, ranging from Europe’s GDPR obligations to new constraints imposed by app stores directly. However, customers have grown more aware of the trade-offs associated with using free software; they frequently want to know how an application protects their security, how their data is accessed, kept, or shared, and so on. Even if a developer’s app follows all of the criteria, the SDK used by the developer may not, or the SDK’s data-sharing behavior may change over time, posing another compliance difficulty.

The goal of Checks is to make obtaining compliance simpler than it is now. To utilize Checks, developers must present their mobile apps for a privacy compliance evaluation, which includes both an automatic and, in certain cases, a human assessment.

They’ll next be asked a few questions and their access will be verified. To create its report, Checks will go through numerous sources of data, such as the application’s privacy policy, SDK information, and network traffic. The team’s breakthroughs in leveraging Natural Language Processing to analyze an application’s privacy disclosures are also used in the solution. Following the completion of the scanning, developers are supplied with a report that contains precise, actionable information into the issues discovered as well as resource lists.

The free tier may be used to complete the Google Play store’s new Data safety section, whereas the premium tiers – Core, Premium, and Enterprise – are intended to fulfill the demands of experienced developers and bigger enterprises, including those that create for iOS.

Checks, that execute its examination on both physical and virtual devices, has no technological needs or preconditions.

Compliance monitoring for legislation such as GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) are included in the $249/month Core service, as are proactive warnings regarding forthcoming compliance obligations. Premium customers ($499/month) may manage the surveillance of their application’s data-sharing policies and learn about SDKs, permissions, and where mobile apps data-sharing occurs, among many other things. Enterprise users (5+ applications and bespoke pricing) get more regular, sophisticated, and in-depth security inspections, as well as accessibility to a compliance review team, unique analysis procedures, as well as other benefits.

The information and reports generated by Checks are not disclosed with the Google Play team, according to the Checks.

To develop Checks, the team solicited feedback from thousands of application developers, then collaborated with Forty early adopters to evaluate the service before its debut.

Checks is now accessible to a broader audience; curious developers can apply online on the Checks site to confirm their participation.
